Default Ch4 Quran Programme - Is Puin's Quran different ?

Taken from Muhammad Mohar Ali’s book “The Quran and The Orientalists”In 1972 a stock of old parchments manuscripts containing manuscripts of the Qur’an was discovered in the loft of the Great Mosque of San’a. in the early eighties the Yamani Antiquities Authority, particularly its President Qadi Isma’il al-Akwa’, ivited through the German Foreign Ministry two German experts, Dr. Gerd. R. Puin and H. C. Graf Von Bothmer, for the restoration and preservation of the manuscripts. They worked at San’a for some years in this project. It appears that besides being experts in restoration and preservation in manuscripts that had “orientalists” motives; for, it is reported that Bothmer make microfilm copies of some 35,000 sheets of the manuscripts and took them to Germany....

that programme was trying to seed as many doubts as possible.

If anything, those manuscripts will contain some of the abrogated verses. Further collaborating hadith accounts about some of the quranic ayahs that were abroagated etc. We should look forward to their release.

The Sana'a fragments are in fact a testament to the textual veracity of the Qur'an. The only 'differences' Puin etc. found were extremely minor variations, which are ultimately of no significance.

What bemuses me is why Mr. Thomas focused so much on theories such as Luxemburg's, while mainstream academic rejection of it was mentioned as a sidenote, almost begrudgingly.

Even in its coverage of the content of the Qur'an, rarely does he genuinely attempt to contextualise unless it forwards a modernist agenda. Perhaps Mr. Thomas should consider whether he is guilty of misrepresentation of the Qur'anic text, something he accuses others of.

One gets the feeling that not only did the film assert a paradox, or a false dilemma, it attempted to construct one - as a matter of expediency so as to portray the Qur'an as a contradictory text. The aim of which was to parade convenient interpretations.

On the whole the programme was a bit of a mixed bag I think.

I much prefer the short "Seven wonders of the Muslim world" segments they are currently showing.

Prof. Muhammad Mustafa al-A'zami addresses Dr. Puin's findings in his introduction to his book, The History of The Qur’ānic Text from Revelation to Compilation: A Comparative Study with the Old and New Testaments, which can be read here.

Post Re: Ch4 Quran Programme - Is Puin's Quran different ?

The Holy Quran is a live book.

Allah (swt) says in Quran 2:106:

"ãÇ ääÓÎ ãä ÁÇíÉ Ãæ ääÓåÇ äÃÊ ÈÎíÑ ãäåÇ Ãæ ãËáåÇ Ãáã ÊÚáã Ãä Çááå Úáì ßá ÔìÁ ÞÏíÑ"
"Any verse (sign or revelation) that We edit or cause to be forgotten, We bring a better one or similar to it. Don't you know that Allah is capable of doing anything?"

This verse is so huge and difficult to comprehend that Allah (swt) duly emphasizes it with "Don't you know that Allah is capable of doing anything?" to convince our small minds that it is indeed possible.

This verse suggest that the Quran text is alive and Allah not only can but does change it both on paper (and read only media like CD-ROM) and deep inside our brains to a better or similar text that exhibits new mathematical miracles that are relevant to different eras and yet keeping the Quran preserved at all times as promised in Quran 15:9 with no human, jinn, or angel aware of the change:

"ÅöäøóÇ äóÍúäõ äóÒøóáúäóÇ ٱáÐøößúÑó æóÅöäøóÇ áóåõۥ áóÍóٰÝöÙõæäó"
"It is We who have sent down the Message and it is We who guard it from corruption.

I find it hard to believe that no one before me has counted the number of verses, words and letters in chapter The Key and didn’t instantly think of prime numbers, unless of course previous text counts were not primes and only recently nearing the Hijri year 1433AH or 2012AH that Allah (swt) made it so. Old copies of the Quran would also be updated to the latest version as per the above verse and Allah knows best.

Thanks Allah for everything and we can only ask Allah for forgiveness and seek His guidance to the Right Path, the path of those who He bestowed His bounties upon, not those who He is angry at, nor those who went astray.

    ٱáúÍóãúÏõ áöáøóåö ÑóÈøö ٱáúÚóٰáóãöíäó
Glory to Allah the Sustainer of all worlds, the Seen and Unseen.

The author's son, Aqil Azami, sent me a scan of Puin's fax, which his father, Mustafa, refers to in this introduction. I've posted the zip file to my blog (in the comments section of the post) for anyone interested in seeing it (it's a hand written Arabic document).
