    Default Prelude to a Dars

    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In sha Allah, I intend to start a series of short lessons on ibn Hajar's classic text on Hadith sciences entitled Nukhbat al-Fikr. These lessons will be very brief in an effort to cover the whole book. The primary goal is to understand the text and understand the issues dealt with in it.

You can read the translation of the text here:

Translation of Ibn Hajar's Nukhbat al-Fikr

Also, the following thread deals with some of the first few issues in Nukhbat al-Fikr:

    Revision of Nukhbat al-Fikar

For those who can read Arabic, there are many commentaries that are more in-depth available to accompany their studies of this text. The most important of them is ibn Hajar's own commentary, Nuzhat al-Nazar, and the commentaries of Nuzhah.

Perhaps the best contemporary commentaries on Nukhbah are:
    • Sharh Nukhbat al-Fikr, Tariq b. Awad Allah
    • Al-Nahj al-Mubtakar fi Sharh Nukhbat al-Fikr, Abu Muhammad Hazim al-Sharbini. In this commentary, he has drawn extensively on the various tapes of Sh. Abdullah al-Sa'd and Sh. Hatim al-Sharif.
Sh. Hatim al-Sharif has an audio commentary on Nuzhat al-Nazar which is probably the best of all contemporary commentaries.

"One of the greatest distinctions of the Salaf was indicated by ibn al-Haaj when he said words to the effect, 'In the days of the Salaf, when the masses would introduce an innovation, the scholars would take it upon themselves to expose its falsehood. As for the scholars of the Khalaf, you will find that when someone from the masses, the rulers, or the wealthy introduce an innovation, the scholars would take it upon themselves to encourage it, defend it and justify it.'

I say: he spoke most truthfully. If any of our rulers or wealthy people would like, then let him try to introduce some innovation, and then seek help from the scholars and the ascetics. He will find them rushing as fast as they can to encourage it and to distort the Book and Sunnah in order to beautify it, and to declare any who would rebut it a heretic or disbeliever, and perhaps the most pious of them is the one who takes it upon himself to remain silent. Truly, to Allah we belong and to Him we will return!" [Sh. Abd al-Rahman b. Yahya al-Mu'allimi, Kitab al-Ibadah (pp. 210-211)]

Before we begin, something has occurred to me... what would you prefer, audio or written lessons?

    Salaam Alaikum,

Ironically I had the opportunity to take a course of this sorts with CA, but had to back out.

For myself, I enjoy written lessons- but if this is going to be in Arabic then my opinion does not count.
The Prophet Muhammad (أ•أ،أ¬ أ‡أ،أ،أ¥ أڑأ‡أأ¥ أ¦ أ“أ،أ£) is reported to have said, "No one had ever been given anything better than patience." (Bukhari, Muslim)

Whichever is the easiest for you.
From Imam al-Shafi'i is also narrated:

@ justabro: Would it not be better to have two threads? One for the lessons (where only you would post) and another for issues, q&a so there is no interruptions?

Preferably audio. It would be an added bonus if you provide something in writing as well (assuming you will have it anyway), but like the brother said, whatever is easier for you. Looking forward to it either way.

audio would be excellent as it allows for beneficial tangents that one would not find from written lessons. jazak Allahu khairan!

    Excellent idea, Ustadh Justabro.

How about you do it live(Audio)? We record it and post it for those are not able to make it to the live session.

You can use Ustream, Paltalk, or anything similar for live broadcast in sha` Allah.
