This is a misconception amongst today's shafie as they take the words from eachother without verifying the sources and the actual texts. My research is in Arabic and under review now as I always end up adding more to since now i am verifying the actual position of al-haitmai besides al-nawawi. Wa Iyakom. Actaullay he never mentioned in any place that it is Makroiuh or Haram but his words indicate that he is with the view that it is Haram

He has extreame secularist views which have led him to reject qati'iyyat such as his alignment with Ramadan on the maratorium of hudood, the issue of khimaar/hijab and also his support for the murtadeen of quillium. check this out bro if you already haven't
