i am referring to the scholar not the wrestler.

somebody informed me today that he initially defended the mubarak regime, calling those who rebel against the ruler as heretics, then when Mubarrak was toppled he said that he was joyous at the moment his huge portrait was taken down from the Parliament.

Is there any truth to this, and if so why should this guy now be hailed as a credible authority in order to drive the Jihad in Syria

I very much doubt this. I remember seeing a video of him encouraging the shabaab DURING the uprising and BEFORE Mubarak was removed.

He truly seems like a sincere scholar to me.

Many of the Salafi shaykhs were against the protests because they didn't think it would work. They still hated Mubarak. Only Madkhalis and their brethren like Usama al Qusi considered Mubarak the rightful 'Wali al amr'
